Supreme court stays Ishrat killing case
The Supreme Court on Monday stayed Gujarat High Court proceedings in a case pertaining to the alleged fake encounter killing of Ishrat Jahan by the state police. A bench comprising Justices B Sudershan Reddy and Deepak Verma ordered a stay on the proceedings following a petition filed by the girl’s mother, questioning the high court’s decision to dispose of the case slated on November 30.
Jahan’s mother Shamima Kaushar had moved the apex court against a high court order staying a judicial probe report on the alleged encounter. The petition will be heard by the apex court on December 7. The high court had on September 9 stayed the report by judicial magistrate S. P. Tamang who reportedly described the “encounter’’ as a cold-blooded murder. In her petition before the apex court, Jahan’s mother contended that the high court erred in entertaining the application by the state government seeking a stay on the report.
