Cuba’s political icon, Fidel Castro claims that he quit as the party’s first secretary 5 years ago when he fell ill in 2006.

Mr. Castro wrote in an opinion piece published early Tuesday that when he got sick in 2006, “I resigned without hesitation from my state and political positions, including first secretary of the party … and I never tried to exercise those roles again.”

The website still lists him as the first party chief.
