French defence minister Herve Morin met his Indian counterpart A.K. Antony in the Capital on Sunday to push for his country’s military equipment suppliers. The discussions included upgrade of the Mirage 2000 fighter planes, the Scorpene submarine deal, the Dassault’s Rafale 126 medium, multi-role combat aircraft and artillery guns for the army. The Supreme Court on Monday stayed Gujarat High Court proceedings in a case pertaining to the alleged fake encounter killing of Ishrat Jahan by the state police. A bench comprising Justices B Sudershan Reddy and Deepak Verma ordered a stay on the proceedings following a petition filed by the girl’s mother, questioning the high court’s decision to dispose of the case slated on November 30. Jahan’s mother Shamima Kaushar had moved the apex court against a high court order staying a judicial probe report on the alleged encounter. The petition will be heard by the apex court on December 7. The high court had on September 9 stayed the report by judicial magistrate S. P. Tamang who reportedly described the “encounter’’ as a cold-blooded murder. Two AFGHAN nationals dodged the security at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday and smuggled out 15 kg heroin. But the duo was caught by Delhi Police crime branch personnel waiting outside. Police commissioner Y.S. Dadwal said there was a tip off about the Afghan nationals who boarded an Ariana Airlines flight from Kabul. A senior customs officer at the airport doubted the police claim. “This is hardly possible. They have to cross the green channel at the airport and it is impossible that so much narcotic substance went undetected,” the officer said.
