Afghan nationals caught with 15kg heroin

Two AFGHAN nationals dodged the security at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday and smuggled out 15 kg heroin. But the duo was caught by Delhi Police crime branch personnel waiting outside. Police commissioner Y.S. Dadwal said there was a tip off about the Afghan nationals who boarded an Ariana Airlines flight from Kabul. A senior customs officer at the airport doubted the police claim. “This is hardly possible. They have to cross the green channel at the airport and it is impossible that so much narcotic substance went undetected,” the officer said. But Dadwal said: “There are methods to conceal contraband.” The duo, Mohd Masoom (45) and Mohammed (30), allegedly brought the contraband — worth around Rs 15 crore in the international market — from Kandahar.

They allegedly concealed the heroin in a cavity inside a suitcase. Initial investigations suggested the consignment was sent from Kabul by Dawood — an Afghan who once stayed in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar area. The crime branch personnel had tracked a suspected receiver, Raju Dawar, who came to the airport in a white Matiz before the flight’s arrival. “He was trailed by the police and a trap was laid at arrival terminal No. 2,” joint commissioner of police, Amulya Patnayak said. Dawar was later arrested along with Masoom after the latter came out of the terminal. Mohammad was later picked up by the police from Hotel Kabli in south Delhi’s Bhogal area.
